Leadership Interview with Vatana Watters

What do you believe are some qualities of a leader?
- To be able to make decisions that are difficult sometimes because they affect everybody in the company, to know what is best for the company and not to only benefit yourself, to be able to recognize peoples talents and put together a team.  They need to think outside the box and listen to ideas and have good communication skills.

Are leaders born or made?
-Mrs. Watters believes that leaders can be both born and made.  She said that you are born with characteristics that make up a leader but what you do with those characteristics is what counts.  Although, she added leaders can also be made from absolute passion in what you do with determination and observing others.

What is the best part about being the founder and president of a successful business?
-The best part is that once you've made your decisions and your team executes it you see all of your challenges and hard effort come together to a great success which is truly a great feeling.  Being able to see what your accomplishments have come to after all the 20 years she has been working with this company and watching people who share the same joy is so entertaining to watch.

What made you interested in starting your own business?
-Mrs. Watters said that she has always had so much passion for the fashion industry.  She said that she has always loved clothing and how it affects the way a person feels and wanting to be a part of making someone feel good about what they are wearing when they go down the isle.  She said she is very lucky that she started a bridal inc. because it is a joyous day in a women's life to pick out her wedding dress and feels very special to be apart of that.

What advice do you give to young leaders?
-Go for your dreams,  you spend so much time with your career so you want it to be something that you really enjoy and will get pleasure out of your successes.  To always be persistent and disciplined and don't be afraid to make mistakes because that is the best way you learn.

  1. Lauren, this is a nice post; Mrs. Watters seems to have accomplished much and has some strong perspectives on leading. It would have been optimal if you could have connected her thoughts back to our class discussions. For example, we discussed Kouzes and Posner's findings that being "forward thinking" is something followers look for in their leaders. Mrs. Watters suggest much the same when she talks about vision and the rewards of seeing it come to fruition.
Your posts to date are generally good. I would counsel you to reread them for clarity. At times, I think your word choice creates some confusion in what you are trying to say. You are missing one post: "how has your vision of leadership changed?" Let's try to get that in this week. Thanks!
